Prepare your Homes for Spring

Prepare your Homes for Spring Easily
Article submitted by Christina Johnson

As the cold winter weather comes to an end, warm springtime weather approaches and with it, spring cleaning. There are many things that can be done inside the home while waiting for the outside to warm up.

HVAC

It is a good idea to check your HVAC system.  Replacing air filters is an easy do-it-yourself item.  Consult a professional about checking the Freon levels in the HVAC to make sure they are sufficient for the upcoming summer months.  You definitely do not want the air conditioning to stop working when it is 90 degrees outside!

Windows

With the warm weather approaching, more time will be spent looking outside.  It is a good idea to clean the windows, inside and outside throughout the house.  Any window treatments should also be cleaned and dusted.  If there are window screens that were removed during the winter months, now is the time to put them back up.

Bedrooms

Preparing the bedrooms involves putting away heavy winter items.  These would include heavy blankets and comforters.  It is a good idea to clean them before packing them away until the next winter.  Winter clothes can also be packed away and lighter summer clothes can be unpacked.

Bathrooms

A thorough inspection of the bathroom is recommended once a year.  Look at the caulk around the seams and see if any maintenance or repairs are needed.  Examine the flooring to see if any repairs are needed, especially if the flooring is tile.  Grout between the tiles can get damaged over time and may need to be fixed. If there is a shower curtain, examine it to see if it needs to be cleaned or replaced. Constant, everyday use of this room can definitely cause some wear and tear but can be easily fixed.

Living Areas

If there are ceiling fans in the living areas, it is a good idea to clean and dust them if they have not been used for a while.  Consider having any cloth covered furniture steam cleaned.  If there are carpets or rugs, have them cleaned also. Now is also a good time to check the smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.  Batteries should be changed and tested at least once a year to make sure everything is working correctly. All of these items should be taken care of once a year, so why not do it now when you are focused on cleaning?

Spring-cleaning offers a time to catch up on any deferred maintenance on the house that may have been neglected during the winter months.  Once you have the inside of the house ready, then you can move to the outside of the house and yard.

Great post. I don't think of a lot of these things. If I get my windows washed I'm doing well.
